"Climb,"... is it literal or metaphorical? For me, this work is inspired by both. First, the literal:
"Climb" looks much like the giant pine trees of my childhood home. The trees' trunks had perfectly distributed branches that spiraled up like a staircase (just like the Texas Bald Cypress captured in this work). I'd climb to the tippy-top, sway in the breeze, and look out over the entire neighborhood. It was glorious. I can still smell and feel the pernicious tar-like sap on my hands. Life is simply perfect at the top of a tree.
The metaphorical meaning of this work embodies the challenge of becoming a full-time artist after sustaining a head injury in 2018. What used to be easy has become extraordinarily challenging. The way up calls with vibrant color and enticing handholds to grip and pull one's dream up to the next rung. The steel-gray sky reminds me that it will not always be easy.
The metaphor of "Climb" inspires strong reactions, even tears. What meaning do you find?
